Barbara A. Meyer, RN, MBA, was born in Chicago on January 13, 1935. After finishing high school in Chicago, Illinois, Barbara attended the University of Chicago School of Nursing. Upon graduation, Barara joined the US Naval Reserve at the rank of Ensign. Barbara served in the Naval Reserve for almost four years. While stationed in Oakland, Ca, Barbara served at the Oakland US Naval Hospital, which was renowned for treating those with mental disorders. Barbara disarmed a patient and saved the staff and the patient from a deadly situation. Barbara's capacity of giving help bring a newer and kinder type of care for soldiers and sailors who suffered physically and mentally. On March 8, 1957, Barbara was awarded a naval commendation for valorous actions by the Commanding officer of the US Naval Station.
In 1958, Barbara was transferred to serve at the US Naval Station in Subic Bay, Philippines. In the Philippines is where Barbara met and fell in love with a dashing young Lieutenant Donald C. Meyer. A few slow dances and the Meyer charm saw Don and Barbara married on the Naval base in November 1958. Barbara's love for Don was stronger than her naval duty, and she gracefully bowed out of the Navy to follow Don on his worldwide naval commissions. Barbara kept working as a nurse and full-time mom to their three children: Christian, Mary and Patrick. Barbara was a lifelong registered nurse, and Barbara earned her MBA in 1979 from National University and enjoyed cruising the seas with Don in their retirement years. Barbara and Don were married for 61 years before Don passed away in 2020. Her three children and five grandchildren survive Barbara, Kyle and Alex Meyer, Andrew, Aidan and Alexis Meyer Grant, who will miss her evermore. Rest in peace, and may you forever be held in your husband's embrace and our Lord's love.
