Beverly Stewart

Beverly McLemore Stewart was born on September 8, 1924, in Los Angeles California to the union of Jim True and Alice Mackey. As the “Matriarch” of the McLemore-Stewart family, our beloved Beverly passed away on “Mother’s Day” May 14th, 2023. Beverly was the oldest of her sister Consuela Alexander of Los Angeles.

Beverly had a determined nature, with a strong work ethic for which she achieved remarkable success in a variety of careers. She attended Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles and later Trade Tech Community College for which received her A.A. degree in Cosmetology. In addition, she was a graduate of West Los Angeles College, UCLA, and Anthony School of Real Estate. As a result of her educational goals, Beverly became a Bookkeeper and Cashier having worked as the first African American in such capacity for two large California Supermarkets. For several years, she was an Eligibility Case Worker for the County of Los Angeles Department of Social Services, where she retired.

In 1985, it was her love and passion for Real Estate that led her to start her own Real Estate company to become the Owner/Broker of McLemore & Associates Real Estate Company on 54th Street in Los Angeles. Beverly’s courage, foresight and clear understanding of management fostered business success as it was a source of pride in the community until she retired to Las Vegas. Beverly earned the honors of “Realtor of the Year Award” from the Los Angeles Board of Realtors; listed “Who’s Who’ in California”; “Top Salesperson”, and “Achievement and Appreciation” recognition from Real Estate companies Coldwell Banker and Century 21. Long before HGTV and other popular home shows of today, Beverly pioneered one of the first “walk-through property” television segments. In addition, she was a savvy entrepreneur for which she owned three beauty shops in Los Angeles.

As a member of organizations such as the national and local chapters of the NAACP & Urban League, Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Alpha Delta Chapter, Association of Realtors and Vice-President & Director of the Los Angeles Southwest Board of Realtors, she spearheaded many community causes for the betterment of others that included “Voter Registration”, holiday volunteering at the Salvation Army to feed the hungry and homeless; and, protested disposal of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain by composing a letter to President George W. Bush. Beverly received many awards and leadership positions with the Southern Nevada Coalition of Concern Women.

Beverly continued her excellence in real estate when she moved to Las Vegas in the early nineties. She made her presence known by contributing to a variety of organizations that included Founder, President of the Southern Nevada Coalition of Concern Women, Las Vegas Connections and acknowledged as 2003 recipient of the “Rose Award” from the Las Vegas Professional Black Women’s Alliance. In addition, she was the Founder of the Las Vegas Chapter of J.U.G.S. (International for Justice, Unity, Generosity and Service), and in 2011, received an Honorary Award for 20 years of Service from the Las Vegas Realtors. Beverly’s faith was particularly important to her as she attended Price Chapel AME Church in Los Angeles and later joined Holy Trinity AME Church in Las Vegas.

Beverly McLemore Stewart was married to John Henry Stewart and Edwin McLemore (who both preceded her in death), three children, the late daughter Donna Rae Curtis (deceased), Gregory McLemore of Las Vegas and Darryl McLemore (deceased); daughters-in-law Mauritta McLemore and DeAnne McLemore. She has one sister Consuela Alexander of Los Angeles, eleven grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Beverly McLemore Stewart leaves a “legacy” of accomplishments which has made a significant difference in the lives of others. She will always be remembered on “Mother’s Day” as a pillar of strength, tenacity, and love within a lifetime.
