Dean Ray Schank, 72, loving husband, father and grandfather returned to his heavenly home on Thursday, January 12, 2012. Dean was born in Fallon, NV on October 10, 1939 to Leroy Christian Schank and Prudence Verona Cox, the youngest of four children. He was a devoted lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, where he served in various capacities throughout his life, including as a fulltime missionary in the US Central States mission. Dean attended the University of NevadaReno and Utah State University, studying vocational agriculture. While at UNR, he participated in the sport of boxing and was a drum major for the marching band.
On August 18, 1962 Dean married Patricia Schofield in the Manti LDS temple, raising five children. After a 1987 divorce, he married Karen Bingham in the St. George temple on May 28, 1988, and raised an additional five children.
Dean worked for several years as the NV Cooperative Extension service as Director of the 4H program. He worked nearly 25 years for the City of Las Vegas Recreation department as Director of Youth Affairs, where he was instrumental in the creation and success of city programs such as the Las Vegas Youth Fair, the Las Vegas Youth Council, the Las Vegas Zoo, and the Las Vegas Corporate Challenge. Dean was an avid photographer, taking pictures and creating multimedia slideshows for numerous citysponsored events. He enjoyed running, bicycling, small boat sailing, and Scouting.
Preceded in death by his brothers Cyril and Stanley and by granddaughter Stephanie Schank, Dean is survived by his wife, Karen, his sister Rose Marie Duane Hatch, and his children, Deanna Jeff Matthews, MichaelMarisel Schank, Stephen Lynn Schank, Christian Candice Schank, Erika Nicholas Layland, Emily Schank, Katherine Schank, Jonathan Schank, Benjamin Schank, and Elizabeth Schank. He leaves behind 23 grandchildren.
A public viewing will be held from 6 to 8 PM Sunday, January 15th, 2012 at Davis Funeral Home, 2127 W. Charleston in Las Vegas. Funeral services will be held Monday January 16 at 1PM, at the LDS chapel located at 4525 N. Rainbow Blvd in Las Vegas. Interment to follow.
