Hugh Carroll Newkirk, Jr
1947 - 2023
Hugh Carroll "Kirkie" Newkirk, of Las Vegas, NV, passed away on May 5, 2023 after valiantly living with Lewy Body Dementia for the last two years. Despite the challenges his intellect and body faced, his spirit and love of life remained strong.
Hugh was born on December 23, 1947 in Wilmington, NC, the youngest child in his family. During his time in college at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Hugh was Student Body President and a Brother of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. After receiving his Bachelor's degree in History from UNCW, Hugh served in the US Navy at the Point Mugu Naval Air Station from 1970-1974. His professional career was most notably in real estate and brokerage, from 1975 to 2017. During this time, Hugh courageously faced the challenge of being a single father after his wife Janet's passing in 1985. After a few years of being a single father, he found healing and regrowth with his new love, Karen, and together they rebuilt the family with Cory and their son, Erik. After working for several companies as realtors, Hugh and Karen opened their own company, Newkirk Realty, selling homes in Sun City Summerlin for 25 years. Hugh’s boundless sense of humor, generosity, and kindness made him well-loved by the people he encountered. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling, eating good food, attending concerts and playing various sports.
Hugh is survived by his wife Karen Newkirk; son Cory Newkirk and his wife Joy; son Erik Newkirk and his wife Jennifer; grandsons Colby and Tyler; granddaughter Kimber; and sister Carroll Herring. Hugh was preceded in death by his first wife Janet (née Schumacher); his sister Elizabeth Connery; and his parents Hugh Newkirk Sr and Margaret (née Peschau). A Celebration of Life for Hugh will be held at Boulder City Veterans Memorial Cemetery in the fall of 2023. The date and time of the service will be determined at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Nevada or the Lewy Body Dementia Association. Expressions of condolences may be sent to the family.
