John R. Burgess, 79, of Las Vegas, passed away August 18th, 2013, from complications following knee surgery. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, served honorably in the Air Force for 14 years, including service during the Korea War and moved to Las Vegas in 1966. He drove a cab for over 35 years, rising to be the 1 seniority driver in the companya position he hoped never to achieve. Dad loved Patricia, his family, sons and grandsons above any other thing on earth. He faithfully served the Alcoholics Anonymous community for over three decades and was recognized for his quiet and consistent leadership as the longest serving temporary secretary at the Sunday
afternoon AA meeting for only 27 years He loved to travel, yell at referees, give driving advice about every speed trap in Las Vegas, watch Jeopardy getting almost every question right, remind politicians who they work for, spend time with his family, collect stamps and baseball cards, and cruise garage salesalways on the lookout for small gifts for needy people in the program. He helped mentor and support hundreds if not thousands of people over the years overcome various life situations and addictions. He will be remembered for his compassion, sense of humor and love for people regardless of their position or condition. He is survived by his partner Patricia Price four sons Michael, Steve, Rick and Danny exwife Phyllis Burgess sister Anna Kelley and brother Bobby Burgess grandsons Justin, Joshua, Caleb and Kaden Burgess and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at the Davis Funeral Home at 2127 W. Charleston Blvd in Las Vegas from 4 8 PM on Sunday, August 25th, and
a burial service will be held at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada, at 9:20 AM on Monday, August 26th.
