Juanita was born on August 8, 1924 in Blackton, Arkansas. She was the youngest of seven children. Her parents, James Cathey and LouVertia Vinson, along with her siblings, Leonard, Horace, Leaslie, Emmit and Geneva, all preceded her in death. She was so much younger than them, she grew up with her nieces and nephews, James, Louis and Pete, who were closer to her in age. She often spoke of many fond memories she had with her family whom she loved and was very proud to be around. Her brother, Leaslie, took her to Chicago to live with him and his family. She attended school there and in Detroit with her sister, Geneva, where she met and married Will Bill Minter in 1941. One child, Carolyn, was born to this union. She later moved to Toledo, Ohio where she met and married Robert Steger. Two children, Carey Janice and Robert, Jr. Bobby was born to this union. In 1962 she and Morgan Shaw moved to California where they shared the better part of thirty years.
After graduating from high school, Juanita attended Herron Beauty College in Toledo, Ohio in 1959 She obtained a Cosmetology Licenses in Ohio, Illinois, California and Nevada. She was the coowner of Head Hunters Beauty Salon in Los Angeles. After her mother became ill she came back to Los Angeles and opened Pacesetters Beauty Shop where she remained for twenty years. She retired in Las Vegas, Nevada for a short time and began styling hair again for a few years. Juanita loved people and gathering with them.
She was a member of Bright Angel Church of Christ though her illness prevented her from attending on a regular basis. She was loved and will be missed by a host of friends and relatives, among them are twelve 12 grandchildren, eleven 11 greatgrandchildren and two 2 greatgreat grandchildren.
