Mary Jane Shurtz Heitschmidt nee DeLong, a 35year resident of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away on Wednesday the 15th of April at home, surrounded by her family and friends and sustained by her strong faith.
Born in 1930 in Newcomerstown, Ohio, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Alvie Jack Shurtz, her brothers Vernon DeLong, Jack DeLong and Walter DeLong , her sister Edith DeLong and her parents Charles C.W. DeLong and Nannie DeLong as well as her cherishd dogs Bingo and Fifi.
Mary touched the lives of many on her earthly journey. She lived her life to the fullest, enjoyed playing bingo, sharing a glass of wine with her friends, vacationing with her eldest daughter and soninlaw, making memories with her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, celebrating her faith with her church family and enjoying the camaraderie of her Red Hat group. Mary shared a sixdecade friendship with Margo and Blair Trimbath, and was loving godmother to their sons Edmund and Scott. Marys life was enriched by her long friendship with Deede McLaughlin who shared years of tears and laughter and who sacrificed greatly to tend to her during her final months.
It is said that a person can be judged by the company they keep. Mary can truly be judged by the friends that she kept. From hairdressers to employers, close friends to neighbors, Mary was loved by all. Mary always played by the rules, and strove to treat everyone she met with kindness and respect.
Mary is survived by her daughters Lynda Anthony Grauso and Beverly Newman, her grandchildren Raphael Grauso, Christopher Grauso, Micah Stacy Grauso, Geoffrey Kerri Grauso, Jennifer Newman, Joseph Newman and Jack Shurtz and her greatgrandchildren Emily Grauso, Carly Grauso, Chance Grauso, Avery Grauso, Sydney Grauso, Hannah Grauso, Joshua Newman and Vincent Newman. She is also survived by nieces and nephews John Lu Barrett, Bob DeLong, Steve DeLong, Dennis DeLong, Diane DeLong, Betsy DeLong, David DeLong, Lisa DeLong, and Doug DeLong.
Viewing will be held at the Davis Funeral Home on West Charleston on Monday, April 18th and funeral services will be held at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Church on Tuesday, April 19th. Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband Jack and her sister and brotherinlaw at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Hollywood Hills in Glendale, California.
