Robert A. Smith, 89, a 48 year resident of Las Vegas, passed away May 15, 2011 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Rosemary and four daughters Carole LaBounty of Colorado, Rosemary Giampapa, Roberta Smith and Robin ORourke Mark of Las Vegas: Grandchildren Catherin Kenerson, Robert Kenerson, Jennifer Krieger, Eddie Giampapa, James LaBounty and Kristin Giampapa: and Great Grandchildren Corbin Freeman, Sydnee and Preston Ramirez and Zane and Shaelyn Claypool. He was preceded in death by oldest daughter Armide Kenerson.
He was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico on March 18, 1922 and attended high school at The Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City, Colorado. He joined the U.S. Navy in September of 1942 and was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He obtained the rank of Chief Pharmacists Mate. He remained in the US Naval Reserve until 1950.
Robert had a fulfilling and rewarding career that began in 1946 with the Zia Company in Los Alamos, New Mexico where he served as Budget Director. In 1963 he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada with his family to accept the position of Director of Finance with Reynolds Electric and Engineering Company. He was promoted in 1965 to Site Facilities Division Manager and served in that position until 1970.
In 1971 he accepted a position with Leisure Industries Ltd. of Nevada and served as Officer, Director and General Manager until 1977. In February 1977 he was hired by Holmes and Narver, Inc. and worked in Houston, Texas as an Administrative Manager and in Saudi Arabia as Resident Manager where he worked until 1984. From 1984 until 1988 he served as Resident Manager on Johnston Island and then returned to Las Vegas to accept a position with Raytheon Services Nevada serving as a Principal Specialist until his retirement in 1995.
In his spare time Robert enjoyed participating in all types of sports and his favorite was tennis. He volunteered with many organizations such as The Sons of Erin, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, The United Way and Girl Scouts of America and served as a Coach for youth sports teams. He was also an avid hunter and fly fisherman and loved the outdoors. He also enjoyed traveling throughout the world with his wife Rosemary.
