On Thursday, December 31, 2020, at the age of 73, Sherrie Rae Solomon went on to be with her Lord and Savior. Sherrie was born on January 13, 1947 in Long Beach, CA to Herschel and Allene Burkhead. After marrying in 1970, Sherrie moved to Las Vegas where she raised her three daughters, Renee, Valerie, Leilani and gained a bonus son, Matt, later in life. For many years, Sherrie was a homemaker until starting her career with the State of Nevada for nearly 30 years.
Being Deaf all her life, Sherrie strongly identified with the Deaf community and made this identity an integral part of her children’s lives as well. All three daughters were taught American Sign Language (ASL) as their first language. Over the years, Sherrie taught ASL in a variety of venues, including her own home. An avid member of the Deaf community, Sherrie served on the board for the Deaf Centers of Nevada and the Las Vegas Charter School for the Deaf. More recently, Sherrie became involved in academia, mentoring American Sign Language students at the College of Southern Nevada. Many students and fellow Deaf community members cherished her and her contributions.
Art and creativity were innate talents that Sherrie expressed in many different ways - in her home decor, her fashion, her paintings, and her drawings. Most notably, Sherrie let her creative side shine during her favorite season, Christmas, by setting up beautiful Christmas village decorations that grew with each passing year.
Faith was an important part of Sherrie’s life and identity. Over the years, Sherrie would direct Bible studies in her home and at Trinity Life Center for fellow Deaf Christians. The Bible was one of her favorite books, and she famously saved songs inside her Bible to sign during her personal time. Sherrie’s bright smile, kind presence, and infectious humor will be sorely missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her mother, Allene, Father, Herschel, and brother, Terry. She is survived by her sister, Bonnie, four children, and seven grandchildren.
