Virgil W. Slade, 88, of Las Vegas, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2012. He was born in La Plata County, Colo., Dec. 12, 1923. Virgil was a World War II combat veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Finding work as a bricklayer, he moved to Las Vegas in 1951 and he soon organized his own construction company and several other business enterprises. He was an active member of the LDS church, serving in many leadership positions, including bishop and in the presidency of the Las Vegas Temple. Virgil was also a Boy Scout volunteer, serving several years on the board of directors of the Boulder Dam Area Council and receiving the Silver Beaver award. Virgil is survived by the love of his life for almost 67 years, Mell Harris seven children, Kelly O. Slade, Torrey Lee Slade, Tona Farris, Tara Slade, Stacy W. Slade, Jena Iverson and Tysa Curry 34 grandchildren and 50 greatgrandchildren. Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, Oct 4, at the El Camino LDS Ward Chapel, 6100 W. Alta Drive. Viewing will be 68 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Davis Funeral Home, 2127 W. Charleston Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89102, and two hours prior to services on Thursday at the church.
